ACID by Emma Pass REVIEW

Summary:

The year is 2113. In Jenna Strong's world, ACID—the most brutal controlling police force in history—rule supreme. No throwaway comment or whispered dissent goes unnoticed—or unpunished. And it was ACID agents who locked Jenna away for life, for a horrendous crime she struggles to remember. But Jenna's violent prison time has taught her how to survive by any means necessary.
When a mysterious rebel group breaks her out, she must use her strength, speed, and skill to stay one step ahead of ACID, and try to uncover the truth about what really happened on that terrible night two years ago. They have taken her life, her freedom, and her true memories away from her. How can she reclaim anything when she doesn't know who to trust?

My Thoughts:

This book was pretty good. It started out amazing with Jenna still in Mileway Maximum Security Prison for killing her parents (which she doesn't remember at all and it turns out she didn't kill them, but was made to believe that she did). There was lots of action in this book (yay!).
But there was also romance and I think that it should not have been in the book at all.
Some of it was confusing (she got her memory wiped about 3 times and I only remembered her getting it done once).
There was a lot of swearing.
There was a weird line near the end of the book that bothered me (and it was there because the author added romance to this book).

My Rating: 3 stars

Friends and Traitors by C. J. Hill REVIEW

*Sequel to Slayers*
Summary:

Tori is at a White House dinner party when she hears a horrifying sound: dragon eggs hatching. It means in less than a year, the dragons will be mature and dangerous. The Slayers are well-trained, but their group is not yet complete, and Tori is determined to track down Ryker Davis, the mysterious Slayer who has yet to surface.
What Tori doesn’t bargain for, however, is the surprising truth about her powers: she isn’t a Slayer after all, but a Dragon Lord, with a built-in predisposition to protect dragons, not kill them.
How will she overcome this to save the lives of her friends?

My Thoughts:

This book is a great sequel to Slayers. It was well written and interesting, unlike many sequels that I have read. I think there is going to be another book, because the story is not really over by the end of this one.
I still don't like the love triangle. It was kind of important in this book, though.
It was surprising that Ryker's cousin is also a Slayer.

My Rating: 5 stars

Fairest: Levana's Story by Marissa Meyer REVIEW

The Lunar Chronicles - Levana's Story
Summary:

In this stunning bridge book between Cress and Winter in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles, Queen Levana’s story is finally told.

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the fairest of them all?

Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told . . . until now.

My Thoughts:

I was really excited to read Levana's backstory because I like it when authors show the story of how the villain became the villain. Although the story was written well and makes you feel bad for Levana, it had some problems.
-For some reason, Levana has a crush on Evret Hayle, a guard who is already married. When his wife dies, she forces him to marry her (which is really awkward).
-Also it talked about her sister, Channary, sleeping with random guards and soldiers.
-It was also a short book with a HUGE preview of Winter, the last book in the Lunar Chronicles, which comes out November 10, 2015.

But the inside cover had a beautiful illustration of the Lunar palace . . .

My Rating: 4 stars

Slayers by C. J. Hill REVIEW

Summary:

Dragons exist. They’re ferocious. And they’re smart: Before they were killed off by slayer-knights, they rendered a select group of eggs dormant, so their offspring would survive. Only a handful of people know about this, let alone believe it – these “Slayers” are descended from the original knights, and are now a diverse group of teens that includes Tori, a smart but spoiled senator’s daughter who didn’t sign up to save the world.
The dragon eggs have fallen into the wrong hands. The Slayers must work together to stop the eggs from hatching. They will fight; they will fall in love. But will they survive?

My Thoughts:

At first, I wasn't sure that I would like this book, since I have read books with dragons that were popular but I didn't seem to like them as much as everyone else. But this book is amazing. It's well written. The prologue (unlike other prologues that you see) was pretty long and VERY INTERESTING. But they don't talk about Ryker very much in this book; he doesn't show up at all. Tori is an interesting choice for the main character . . . I didn't like her very much at first, but her attitude got better later on.
The weird thing was the love triangle. It seemed like it was forced into the story, because it wasn't there for two-thirds of the book.

My Rating: 5 stars

Apparently they changed the cover. I like them both.

Cress by Marissa Meyer REVIEW

The Lunar Chronicles: Book Three
Summary:

In this third book in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.
Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl imprisoned on a satellite since childhood who's only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.
When a daring rescue of Cress goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing prevent her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only hope the world has.

My Thoughts:

THIS BOOK IS SO AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! ok. So "Cress" is short for "Crescent Moon". Weird name. She's the version of Rapunzel in this series. She seems to be a future version of a fangirl as well.
It was a little boring when Cress's satellite crashes to earth and she travels with Thorne through the desert. And it was weird when she was kidnapped, but I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

My Rating: 5 stars

Dove Arising by Karen Bao REVIEW

Summary:

Phaet Theta has lived her whole life in a colony on the Moon. She’s barely spoken since her father died in an accident nine years ago. She cultivates the plants in Greenhouse 22, lets her best friend talk for her, and stays off the government’s radar.
Then her mother is arrested.
The only way to save her younger siblings from the degrading Shelter is by enlisting in the Militia, the faceless army that polices the Lunar bases and protects them from attacks by desperate Earth dwellers. Training is brutal, but it’s where Phaet forms an uneasy but meaningful alliance with the preternaturally accomplished Wes, a fellow outsider.
Rank high, save her siblings, free her mom:  that’s the plan. Until Phaet’s logically ordered world begins to crumble...

My Thoughts:

I was really excited to read this book BECAUSE IT'S DYSTOPIAN AND TAKES PLACE ON THE MOON. I am a huge fan of books/movies/TV shows set in space, so I picked it up off the library shelf and decided to read it. The beginning was a little boring, but it got better a little farther into the book.  It swore a few times. The end/near the end/the middle was surprising. AFTER ALL SHE DOES TO SAVE HER MOTHER, HER MOTHER IS EXECUTED???? WHY??? It leaves her siblings and herself without parents, since her father died. But why does Phaet abandon her family to go to Earth? It leaves off on a cliffhanger, so there's probably going to be a sequel.

My Rating: 3 or 4 stars

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer REVIEW

The Lunar Chronicles: Book Two
Summary:

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison--even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive.
Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

My Thoughts:

After reading Cinder, I was excited to read more in this series. It was pretty good, though not as good as the previous book. It talks a lot more about Scarlet than about Cinder. I was kind of disappointed because of that, but Scarlet's story is still interesting. Captain Thorne is really annoying.
WHY DOES SCARLET'S GRANDMOTHER DIE AT THE END EVEN WHEN THEY WENT SO FAR TO RESCUE HER?????????? Levana is an intriguing character, but why is she so obsessed with wanting to marry Prince Kai???

My Rating: 3.5 stars

Echo in Time by C. J. Hill REVIEW

*Sequel to Erasing Time*
Summary:

After being pulled 400 years into the future, twins Taylor and Sheridan have found some refuge from the government of Traventon, which used the dangerous Time Strainer to yank the girls from the past. Yet the threat of the dangerous technology still looms. Taylor and an ally, Joseph, are selected to go on a mission to destroy the time machine and weapon. But their actions before they do may have major consequences for the future and the past.

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed Erasing Time, so I was excited to read Echo in Time. While most sequels to great books are usually terrible or the story is not interesting, this one was actually good. The story was great, although it is sad that Sheridan and Taylor can never go back to their old lives in the 21st century.
But some of it was confusing. For some reason, the character Joseph was mostly called "Echo" even though by the end of Erasing Time, everyone (the main characters) found out that he wasn't Echo (his twin brother). I thought it was strange that when Echo was pulled forward in time (so that he wouldn't die), he also pulled Allana out (so that she wouldn't die) even though she betrayed him many times in the past.

My Rating: 4 stars

The Secrets of Blood and Bone by Rebecca Alexander REVIEW

Sequel to The Secrets of Life and Death.

Summary:

Following her showdown with Elizabeth Bathory, Jackdaw Hammond is running from her past, hiding from her future, and hoping to contain her newfound thirst for blood. Buying an overgrown home in the middle of nowhere seems like the perfect place to escape…at least until she finds herself in the sights of a murderous family with a terrible secret and a penchant for dark magic. Meanwhile, her old ally Felix Guichard has gone to New Orleans to conduct his own investigation into the nature of blood magic, but is soon sucked into the intrigues of the city’s occult underworld. But Jack will need Felix more than she knows, for the battle for her soul is set to begin.
Her only salvation may lie with the secrets of 16th century master occultist Edward Kelley, and a dangerous mission he undertook in Venice to confront the Inquisition, the darkest deeds of his own past, and the fearsome power of Elizabeth Bathory.

My Thoughts:

After reading The Secrets of Life and Death, I was excited to read The Secrets of Blood and Bone because the first book (The Secrets of Life and Death) was a good fantasy story that made you not want to put down. I was, however, very disappointed in The Secrets of Blood and Bone. The story got more interesting later in the book, but the majority of the book was not very interesting. The historical fiction chapters were not as interesting as the ones in the previous book and the only way that you knew they were historical is because the narration went from third person to first person.

 Negative Content:

-There was some kissing.
-When researching a revenant's obsession with blood (to keep them alive), Felix goes to a "vampire night club" sort of thing.
-When Felix got drunk at the night club, he slept with someone (thankfully there were no details in the book about it).

My Rating: 1 star

Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth REVIEW

Summary:

Two years before Beatrice Prior made her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation’s faction leader did the same. Tobias’s transfer to Dauntless is a chance to begin again. Here, he will not be called the name his parents gave him. Here, he will not let fear turn him into a cowering child.
Newly christened “Four,” he discovers during initiation that he will succeed in Dauntless. Initiation is only the beginning, though; Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. His decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future—and the future of the entire faction system.
Two years later, Four is poised to take action, but the course is still unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might change all that. With her, the way to righting their world might become clear. With her, it might become possible to be Tobias once again.

ONE CHOICE breaks free of his past.
ONE CHOICE embraces his future.
ONE CHOICE exposes the dangers.
ONE CHOICE changes him - forever.
ONE CHOICE WILL FREE HIM.

What I Liked:

I was excited to read this because it is basically like Divergent - except instead of Tris it's Tobias. Reading about his life and his Dauntless initiation was fun and enjoyable. It was also nice reading parts from Divergent from his perspective.

What I Didn't Like:

It swore once. I was surprised because none of the books in the Divergent Trilogy swore. Also, it wasn't as long as I would have liked.

My Rating: 4.5 stars

The Secrets of Life and Death by Rebecca Alexander REVIEW

Summary:

In modern day England, Professor Felix Guichard is called in to identify occult symbols found on the corpse of a young girl. His investigation brings him in contact with a mysterious woman, Jackdaw Hammond, who guards a monumental secret--She's Dead. Or she would be, were it not for magic which has artificially extended her life. But someone else knows her secret. Someone very old and very powerful, who won't rest until they've taken the magic that keeps her alive....
In Krakow in 1585, Dr. John Dee, the Elizabethan Alchemist and Occultist, and his assistant Edward Kelley have been summoned by the King of Poland to save the life of his niece, the infamous Countess Elisabeth Bathory. But they soon realize that the only thing worse than the Countess' malady, is the magic that might be able to save her...
As Jackdaw and Felix race to uncover the truth about the person hunting her, it becomes clear that the answers they seek can only be found in the ancient diary of John Dee's assistant, Edward Kelley. Together they must solve a mystery centuries in the making, or die trying.

My Thoughts:

It was a really good story. The part I found most interesting was that you can save someone from death but they aren't the same. The historical fiction chapters were really interesting but you only know that they are historical because the narration changes from third person to first person.
But it also swore a lot.

Allegiant by Veronica Roth REVIEW

Divergent Trilogy: Book Three
Summary:

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered - fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she's known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris's new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend to complexities of human nature - and of herself - while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

ONE CHOICE can transform you.
ONE CHOICE can destroy you.
ONE CHOICE WILL DEFINE YOU.

My Thoughts:

This book was almost as good as the first and was a lot more interesting than Insurgent. First, the good things: the plot was awesome. I mean, the fact that they were being lied to all their lives because there was no war that made the faction system come into existence is cool.
Now, the bad things: the romance between Tris and Tobias gets inappropriate. I hate it when things like that happen. It ruins the book. Also, the end. WHY DID TRIS HAVE TO DIE??? I DON'T UNDERSTAND. WHY?????????????????????

My Rating: 3 stars

Erasing Time by C. J. Hill REVIEW

Summary:

When twins Sheridan and Taylor wake up 400 years in the future, they find a changed world: domed cities, no animals, and a language that's so different, it barely sounds like English. And the worst news: They can't go back home.
The twenty-fifth-century government transported the girls to their city hoping to find a famous scientist to help perfect a devastating new weapon. The same government has implanted tracking devices in the citizens, limiting and examining everything they do. Taylor and Sheridan have to find a way out of the city before the government discovers their secrets. To complicate matters, the moblike Dakine has interest in getting hold of them too. The only way for the girls to elude their pursuers is to put their trust in Echo, a guy with secrets of his own. The trio must put their faith in the unknown to make a harrowing escape into the wilds beyond the city.

What I Liked:

Everything! Although it isn't my favorite book, it is a cool time travel story and I loved it. It would be cool to wake up 400 years in the future.

What I Didn't Like:

Some of the romance was weird.

Insurgent by Veronica Roth REVIEW

Divergent Trilogy: Book Two
Summary:

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.
Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

A CHOICE becomes a sacrifice.
A SACRIFICE becomes a loss.
A LOSS becomes a burden.
A BURDEN becomes a battle.
ONE CHOICE CAN DESTROY YOU.

My Thoughts:

Insurgent had the potential to be as good as Divergent. But it wasn't, even though it was well written. It is hard to write a sequel to a book that is as good or better than the first. It didn't have the same pace as Divergent and was not that good of a storyline.

My Rating: 3 stars

Cinder by Marissa Meyer REVIEW

The Lunar Chronicles: Book One
Summary:

Sixteen-year-old Cinder is considered a technological mistake by most of society and a burden by her stepmother. Being a cyborg does have its benefits, though: Cinder's brain interface has given her an uncanny ability to fix things (robots, hovers, her own malfunctioning parts), making her the best mechanic in New Beijing. This reputation brings Prince Kai himself to her weekly market booth, needing her to repair a broken android before the annual ball. He jokingly calls it "a matter of national security", but Cinder suspects it's more serious than he's letting on.
Although eager to impress the prince, Cinder's intentions are derailed when her younger stepsister, and only human friend, is infected with the fatal plague that's been devastating Earth for a decade. Blaming Cinder for her daughter's illness, Cinder's stepmother volunteers her body for plague research, an "honor" that no one has survived.
But it doesn't take long for the scientists to discover something unusual about their new guinea pig. Something others would kill for.

What I Liked:

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ok. So this book is based on Cinderella, but with  sci-fi elements. That is why I picked it up. And i'm so glad I did. *smiles* It also had some romance, but it wasn't too bad. Iko is an android with a human girl's personality and is really funny.

What I Didn't Like:

It swore a couple times.

Divergent by Veronica Roth REVIEW

Divergent Trilogy: Book One
Summary:

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are - and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy you.

ONE CHOICE decides your friends.
ONE CHOICE defines your beliefs.
ONE CHOICE determines your loyalties - forever.

What I Liked:

I don't think I have ever read a second book in a series that is as good as the first one. Alicorns sound awesome (I want one!!!!!!!!!!!). Ironskin by Tina Connolly REVIEW

Summary:

Jane Eliot wears an iron mask.
It's the only way to contain the fey curse that scars her cheek. The Great War is five years gone, but its scattered victims remain - the ironskin.
When a carefully worded listing appears for a governess to assist with a "delicate situation" - a child born during the Great War - Jane is certain the child is fey-cursed, and that she can help.
Teaching the unruly Dorie to suppress her curse is hard enough; she certainly didn't expect to fall for the girl's father, the enigmatic artist Edward Rochart. But her blossoming crush is stifled by her scars and by his parade of women. Ugly women, who enter his closed studio . . . and come out as beautiful as the fey.
Jane knows Rochart cannot love her, just as she knows that she must wear iron for the rest of her life. But what if neither of these things is true? Step by step, Jane unlocks the secrets of her new life - and discovers just how far she will go to become whole again.

My Thoughts:

I bought this book at a used book sale because it sounded like an interesting storyline. THIS BOOK WAS REALLY BORING and I only read about six or seven chapters. I'm not sure if it was just me or if it's the way it was written, but I stopped reading it anyway. I just wish that it was written better so that I could read ALL of it and love it.

Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger REVIEW

Keeper of the Lost Cities series: Book One
Summary:

Twelve-year-old Sophie has never quite fit into her life. She's skipped multiple grades and doesn't really connect with the older kids at school, but she's not comfortable with her family, either. And Sophie has a secret - she's a Telepath, someone who can read minds. But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she's not alone. He's a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well . . . she isn't. Fitz opens Sophie's eyes to a shocking truth, and almost instantly she is forced to leave behind her family for a new life in a place that is vastly different from what she has ever known.
But Sophie still has secrets, and they're buried deep in her memory for a good reason: the answers are dangerous and in high-demand. What is her true identity, and why was she hidden among humans? The truth could mean life or death - and time is running out.

Immortal by Gillian Shields REVIEW

Immortal series: Book One
Summary:

Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, housed in a Gothic mansion on the bleak northern moors, is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn away from her home by the sea to become the newest scholarship student, she is more isolated than she could have dreamed. Strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave Evie drowning in loneliness.

As Evie's feelings for Sebastian grow with each secret meeting, she starts to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl - a girl who is so eerily like Evie, she could by a sister.
